Katy Perry performs Firework at Biden and Harris’ inauguration

“Maybe a reason why all the doors are closed so you could open one that leads you to the perfect road.”

Unlike my previous posts, this one will be slightly different. As always, my posts are my personal approach to pop culture reference — mostly films — but this time, I’m going to talk about Katy Perry’s song Firework from her Teenage Dream album and how it connects with a birthday woman and President Joe Biden.

The song was released about a decade ago. Little did we know at the time, what was a party song turned out to be the last song sung at a presidential inauguration digital party on January 21st, 2021 in a pandemic, no less.

Today the United States of America celebrated its new leaders, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. I’m not an American but today I heard executives and government officials in my home country expressing their hopes for a more “stable” future, thanks to the new leaders.

The song has always been about finding one’s worth despite circumstances and sometimes it’s damn hard to find how much our worth amid problems, diseases, as well as pressures from people who tent to gaslight us.

“Do you know that there’s still a chance for you? ’Cause there’s a spark in you.”

That brings us to the connection of this song to a woman, she has her birthday today. She is my dear friend; a career woman, a mother, a journalist, and I think she was a lawyer at one point in her life.

At the lowest point in my life, she brought me a warm hello and bought me a cold chocolate cake. I will never forget that kind of kindness. That was the embodiment of Katy Perry’s lyrics that there was still a chance for me.

Today, as a nation celebrates its democracy, a woman celebrates its birthday, I celebrate all the blessings I’ve had so far in my life. God bless you and remember, “Baby, you’re a firework!”
